After nearly three years of being closed to the public, the Port Isabel lighthouse is set to reopen on Jan. 2, 2018.
Port Isabel Marketing Director Valerie Bates says the only lighthouse on the Texas gulf coast that’s open to the public has been significantly restored.
“The railing at the top completely re-manufactured — the outside of the light house has been completely re-surfaced,” Bates said.
Crews repainted the outside of the light house and replaced two small railings on the top of the tower. After local business owners say the closure affected foot traffic, they’re excited for the new year.
“This is a great New Years gift for the people here in the square,” said Edward Gachiri, owner of Unique Jewlery, Arts and Crafts.
